Changes to ThisWebHost: Currency and Pricing

Due to internal structure changes, ThisWebHost is now a UK registered limited company. Because of this, we are now in the process of changing our internal payment gateways to accept payment in GBP (British Pounds). We expect this process to be completed within the next 7 days. If you’re alarmed by reading this, please don’t be.

What’s going on? Have you been bought out or purchased by another company? Is my hosting service going to change?
The answer to all of these questions is a very clear “no”. The reason for the change to a UK limited company is simply one of convenience. The director and majority shareholders of ThisWebHost are UK citizens, so it seemed only appropriate to register the company in the UK. The internal structure (staff, servers, support) remain exactly the same with no change(s) at all so there will be no difference to the service that we provide.

Again, these are merely internal changes.

What happens to the pricing?
Due to fluctuations with exchange rates, we are going to effectively have 2 different pricing options. Our current pricing in USD will remain, but we will also add prices in GBP for those within the UK. If you are purchasing from the UK, you will notice a ‘GBP’ currency option within the shopping cart area and may pay in GBP if you wish. We will try our best to keep the pricing as close as possible but you may notice a small increase.

If you are outside the UK and pay in USD, depending on the payment method that you use you may or may not notice any changes. If paying by Google Checkout, you will notice that the USD value is converted to GBP during the checkout process. Please note that whilst the conversion occurs, you are still paying the same price, just in a different currency. If you pay by PayPal or PayPal subscription, you will notice no changes at all. The payments will remain in USD and no conversion is performed.

What happens to my currently active PayPal subscription?
Before we migrate gateways, we will be canceling all recurring payments from our previous PayPal account. If you had a current PayPal subscription setup, you will need to create a new one to our new PayPal account. You can do this by viewing a due invoice on or before the due date, and selecting the ‘PayPal Subscribe’ option.

When will these changes occur?
We will implement these changes on August 1st 2010.

I am a UK customer/live in the UK. Does this mean I can now get my hosting in the UK?
We are looking at colocation providers, and our aim is to be able to offer UK hosting solutions in the near future.

I’m a customer in the USA – are you moving my site/servers to the UK?
Absolutely not. These changes are internal only, and no changes are being made to our network or customer websites.

Should you wish to discuss this change, or have any questions, comments or concerns; please either create a ticket within your client area, or respond to this blog post.

@Riccardo: If paying by PayPal it’s up to you if you choose GBP or USD. If paying by Google Checkout, it’ll be converted to GBP at the end anyway.

We do not charge VAT on hosting.

I’m hoping this doesn’t affect pricing in the future because your prices and the options you get for the money is awesome. Compared to UK hosting companies who really take you for a ride to get a decent options (Fasthosts charge you an extra £50!! for an additional sql database)…ridiculous I know!

You guys are fantastic value for money with excellent customer support. As long as these changes remain internal then I’m still a very happy customer :)

@Heinrich: Since our infrastructure is still primarily within the US, our pricing shouldn’t change at all. Whilst it’s true that UK hosting is more expensive (and more expensive to provide), we have no plans to move anything to the UK so our costs will almost remain the same. Because of this, we have no need to increase prices as a result of these changes.

  • [...] This is my webhost’s blog post notifying us about some changes in currency & pricing of their hosting plans. Not much of an issue except, they only mention changes specific to US & UK customers. They either forgot about the 5/10 customers they have in ASIA or other similar always-forgotten regions or just choose to ignore those minorities. [...]

This is great news for me as I host sites both for US and UK based people. I look forward to you guys getting hosting solutions here in the UK soon as I am starting to look at providers here, and would rather stay with you guys :) Any rough idea when you might be able to provide a UK hosting service?

@developerpanda Nobody is forgetting anyone the same level of service will be offered just the company is taking a different internal approach, it is no different of a service from what you have no and from what i can gather that has been fine up until now.

@Deb/DeveloperPanda: How is this any different from you paying in USD, as you have been already? The short answer is; it isn’t. Nothing changes for you as an Asian customer at all.

Jules, i understood that part. Least you could have done is mention something in the lines ‘customers outside US/UK can continue to pay in USD’.

I love how you guys delete any comments that mention that some customers WILL see a small increase in price due to this. You don’t like what your customers have to say so you silence them. On top of that, you are obviously making comments on your own, as no idiot would come on here to talk about how exciting this is unless it were one of you putting a positive spin on it.

I’ve been with This since nearly the beginning. I don’t know what has kept me here. I think maybe I took pride in the fact that I was supporting the little guy. Unfortunately, the little guy has proven to be unprofessional and uncaring time and time again. So, I think it’s time to move on.

@NotImpressed: I’m sorry you feel that way, but I’m afraid most of what you’ve said is not at all correct.

Firstly, we have deleted no comments from this blog. Ever. We believe in freedom of speech, so all constructive comments are welcome here – including yours. Stating that we have deleted comments is simply put; a lie, so please don’t spread such misinformation.

Regarding us making the comments above? Again, you’re wrong. These are customers of ours, and many of their sites can be seen by clicking on their names. We have far better things to do than falsify comments on this blog.

No price increases will be experienced at all – and I’m not sure why you think it’s going to. All that has happened here is we’ve added the ability to support payments in GBP. If payment is made via Google Checkout, the USD amount is converted dynamically using the current exchange rate to GBP. How is that a price increase, exactly? Sure, there may be a difference of perhaps 1 or 2 cents/pence (due to the nature of rounding the numbers) but this is unavoidable, and also not something I see the need to protest about.

If you’ve been with us since the start, you should be fully aware that over time we’ve actually DROPPED prices, not increased them. I’m sure many, many of our customers will disagree with you that we’re unprofessional and uncaring.

Let me recap; if you pay in USD pretty much nothing has changed. If you pay in USD and utilise Google Checkout then the amount will be converted to GBP; but will remain the same price, just a different currency. No price increases at all. If you pay in USD and use PayPal, then absolutely nothing will change for you at all – the price and currency remain the same.

If you are a UK customer you have the *option* to pay in GBP. This is not forced on you and you can continue to pay in USD should you wish.

    @jules & @notimpressed

I agree fully with where this* is taking the company, if you were to have any evidence it would be appreciated if you posted it here rather than posting comments which are un-supported, the fact that you don’t even use your real name isn’t really a great start for your case.

I don’t know where you get the price increase from, as Jules said if you use paypal as i have all along then it dynamically converts the USD amount to GBP anyway so there really is no change.

I have been happy with the level of service that i have go from this* always had a ticket responded to and in some cases Jules has always gone well out his way to make my time with this* the best. If you do have some evidence of comments being deleted then why not share that otherwise you may want to re-think your previous comment.
