A little about us, and what we do

The Background Story

Once upon a time, back in 2007, a community of web developers and other assorted Internet entrepreneurs discovered that finding good quality hosting these days is like competing in "The Running Man" (or "woman" for you nerdy ladies)... and losing, unlike our hero Arnie.

They looked at shared hosting with the big named hosts and experienced nothing but slow, oversold servers, and impersonal automated responses to tickets. They felt like the were just another person in line at the DMV, waiting to be served by the next suicidal representative. When the sites went down (and oh boy, they did.. regularly), they were told that it must be a problem with their connection. Our heroes knew better.

They went through many hosts, taking advantage of amazing $1/month "COMPLETELY UNLIMITED" and insanely-low priced hosting offers. Eventually they found a few that didn't serve pages slower than a Hilary Duff photo gallery with 10,000 teenage girls browsing it at any one time. They were happy... for a while. But our intrepid adventurers soon found out that evil was lurking just around the corner.

When one of their sites reached the front page of digg, their site was suspended for "abusing server resources". "Alas, this cannot be!" they exclaimed in almighty disappointment, "Since when has having a popular website been an abuse of server resources?". It was the same story when they attempted to use 100GB of disk space to store images of their stamp collections, and they were suspended yet again. Our heroes soon learned that "unlimited" is but a fairy-tale....

Low in morale, our team decided to try some of the smaller, lesser known hosts. Luck was indeed not on their side, and no sooner had they ventured out into the various web hosting forums, they discovered the plague that is the "16 year old bedroom webhost, reselling hosting on their $20/month VPS!". Our heroes were completely outnumbered, and didn't stand a chance! Even their '+200 defense' Paladin shield was useless at protecting them from the non-existant support that the enemy offered.

"There has to be another way!" they thought. So they set out and looked into obtaining their own VPS. Surely if they were in control of their own server (albeit virtual), then nothing could go wrong. And so it was decreed that our adventurers would obtain their own VPS and manage the "server" themselves, and everything was good... for a short time.

One late Saturday evening the telephone rang. It was an unhappy customer announcing that their website was down. Disgruntled, our team investigated and found that the entire VPS was down. Contacting their VPS provider, they were met with claims that they needed to "purchase more RAM" to fix the issue. Left with little choice, they agreed, but yet the problems persisted. Contacting their provider again, they were told that they had completely "outgrown" their VPS and were then offered a completely dedicated server. Knowing this to be nothing more than an evil sales pitch by the provider to sell more dedicated servers, they decided to slay the dragon... and the VPS was no more.

Weary from their adventures, and almost soul destroyed, they decided that something has to change. No more would they be fooled with budget $1/month hosting that promises the world and doesn't deliver. No more would they be lied to about "unlimited disk space" and "unlimited bandwidth". They were going to take matters into their own hands.

Realising that collectively they had a world of experience and skills amongst them, they purchased a dedicated server (which they managed themselves) and began providing hosting to their friends and colleagues. Word grew, and they went from hosting a handful of websites, to over 50 and growing almost daily. People kept commenting about how awesome their hosting was, and how they hadn't had a single moment of downtime in months. Finally they had found the holy grail - a solution which worked for everyone involved.

As with all good things, they had to share their excitement with the world. "Why don't we offer our services so that others don't have to suffer the same fate?" they thought. It was at that moment, my friends, ThisWebHost was born.

Our Vision

There are literally tens of thousands of hosts out there in the world, but most of them aren't like us.

Sure, we can write silly stories explaining how we came about, but we have a serious side too. YOU are our most valuable commodity, and we realise this. Without YOU, we have no business and cannot offer hosting. This is precisely why WE will always provide YOU with the high level of service that you deserve.

So just how do we do this?

Firstly, we know what we're doing. It's an arrogant claim, but it's the truth, and we have the qualifications to prove it. Not only do we have the qualifications, but our team have over 10 years (each) experience within the hosting industry, either working for other hosts or providing their own server management. We've been around the block a few times and back again, and we all have the T-Shirt.

Many of us have the same backgrounds as our clients. We're developers, designers, programmers, you name it. We stay up to date with current affairs, and we see the interests as they happen. If a new technology comes out and sparks interest in the community, chances are that we'll want to play with it too! We're completely flexible and always willing to hear what our clients want.

But it's not all about the qualifications and the skills now, is it? Many people experience rude and even almost patronising support from other hosts. It seems like they just take your money and are almost offended that you've had the gall to contact them afterwards, right? We know this, because we've also been hosting clients before. We won't give you the same cold treatment that we've experienced with others.

Above all, we're honest and open to our clients. We love to communicate changes and ask for feedback on particular issues. Most hosts will lie and "upsell" themselves, but with us we tell it like it is. We hope that you do the same with us.
